Some decisions begin in private and end up affecting the lives of others. A relationship that violates an existing commitment, resentment that turns into revenge, or the desire to hold on to a position can set consequences in motion that no one can undo.

There is something strange about the way we look at other people’s lives.

I was listening to a reflection about people who only seem to appear when they need something. As I listened, I found myself remembering a moment from years ago that has never really left me. At the time, I was listening to a sermon about Naaman. The message was about process, obedience, and the battles that often remain hidden behind the things people admire. Yet what stayed with me the most was not something the preacher said. It happened during a moment of ministry and prayer.

Never before have there been so many people desperate to be known… without knowing who they really are.

Vanity promises to fill us, but it never manages to give us peace.

Envy and pride rarely announce themselves in a way that makes us recognize them right away. Sometimes they begin with something much smaller: comparing ourselves to someone else, resenting what another person has achieved, feeling that we deserved the recognition someone else received, or slowly beginning to believe that we are more important than we really are.

Freedom can seem like the end of a story. We leave behind what was hurting us, move on from a difficult season, and expect to immediately feel the relief of having reached something better. But in the spiritual life, leaving does not always mean that everything we carried with us has been left behind.

There are moments in Scripture that do more than tell us what happened; they reveal how a tragedy can begin long before its consequences become visible.

Not every betrayal begins with a lie. Sometimes it begins with something that is true, but that should never have been placed in certain hands.
